The Institute of National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) proposes to observe the World Water Day 2008 by organising a programme for youth titled Water and Sanitation Role of Youth. The programme is meant to create awareness among the youth about water and its interrelationship with sanitation. About 200 students are expected to participate the programme and the National Commission for Human Development NCHD-VCD volunteers being change agents in the society, would carry forward the messages to a greater community of peers as well as public. The programme includes a debate on 'Reason for Open Defecation: Poverty or Force of Habit?', street play on Water Conservation, Folk performance on sanitation, side events including exhibition/poster presentation of government schemes for water as well as sanitation, water quality testing, water conservation methods, water saving irrigation techniques etc.
The programme will conclude with the Water Day address by the chief guest, Miss Wahida Zafar Distt: General Manager DGM- NCHD-ABBOTTABAD says, It is not only the task of government and the corporate world to assure clean, safe water for every man, woman and child. It is up to us, the general public of the state, and the users of water, to get involved and stay involved in the protection of the waters of the region.
However, in many locations this is not the case and lives are threatened by extremely poor water quality. The need for cooperation, education, project security and action draws people together around a common interest. In this connection to establish" District Clean and Safe Water Council "in each district to change mindset of people towards water resource management and awareness of Clean and Safe Water related activities in all four provinces of Pakistan, which should be highlighted by using print and electronic media on its extreme.
It is a means of helping to educate people about the importance of local water quality and encouraging them to become personally responsible in working to protect local water resources from misuse. Further more it promote personal stewardship and individual participation in the safeguard of each district water resources. They must continue highlighting the critical role of collaborative partnerships necessary to enjoy clean and safe water for many uses.
Access to uncontaminated water is a human right and a basic need essential for health and human dignity, because sustainable development starts with People’s Health and Dignity so as there is no substitute for water, in this regard the “Blue Revolution” is the only answer and way out in the world.
