The Local Government Division under the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development & Cooperatives, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, NGO Forum for DWSS, DFID, WHO and UNICEF jointly organized the ceremony for the World Water Day on Sanitation on 22 March 2008 in the capital city. This included the launch of the International Year of Sanitation and the National Handwashing Campaign in Bangladesh. A theme song on sanitation and two TV Spots on proper hand washing were screened as part of the National Handwashing Campaign Launching.

Various speakers underscored the need of prevention of water and excreta-borne diseases through practicing proper hand washing. They said that lack of hygienic sanitation facilities is seriously affecting safe water supply, environment and the public health situation. Hence it is imperative to ensure sustainable sanitation facilities to prevent water and environment pollution.

As a part of observance of the World Water Day and the International Year of Sanitation some other events were organized throughout the country which included School Visit and Cultural Programmes in Dhaka; Symposium, Rally, Hand Washing Demonstration at different schools and cultural events at district level etc. A leaflet containing messages in relation to sanitation and hygiene issues was published and distributed to sensitize the target communities.
