Water day at Birzeit University

The Water Studies Institute (WSI) at Birzeit University in cooperation with the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) and the Engineering Association (EA)- RAmallah branch are going to celebrate the World Water Day for the year 2005. The celebrations will be held on March 29-30, 2005 at Birzeit University, Water Studies Institute. On this occasion Birzeit University will commence its first grand annual event of Birzeit Water and Environment Days (BWED) which will be organized annually coinciding with the World Water Day. The BWED 2005 will emphasize the productive cooperation between Birzeit University, UNESCO-IHE and Wageningen University in the Netherlands and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden as viable examples of Success Stories in the field of water and environment education. WSI will celebrate having 10 years of water topics education. Another main activity is opening of the wastewater research and demonstration pilot plant at Al Bireh wastewater treatment plant. This plant has been established within the framework of the capacity building projects at Birzeit University.
BWED 2005 will incorporate a gender perspective by allocating a one whole day for women speakers active in the Palestinian water sector. The activities will include a congress discussing topics as wastewater treatment and reuse, water treatment, groundwater exploitation, pollution prevention, nutrient management, and much more will be discussed and elaborated during the three-day program.
The WSI has the ambition of setting up an outstanding show of the Palestinian Water Industry at the campus of Birzeit University. The campus of Birzeit University is envisaged to be crowded by visitors from all sectors of the water technology industry. The show is intended to give the visitors an overview of the present business and technology trends and developments in Palestine. Active water industry enterprises will be offered the possibility of having stand space. Various possibilities will be available to comply with the wishes of the applied enterprises. A high-quality program of special visitors, seminar, excursion, and participants from all water related sectors, private, governmental and non governmental as well as academic including around 500 engineering students from the faculty of engineering at Birzeit University will guarantee an inspiring and very useful visit to the show. A full scope of exhibits showing the present and latest in equipment, materials and systems in the Palestinian market will make a visit to the show more than worthwhile. As a most important platform for water technology, the BWED 2005 will give a preview of large-scaled water projects through an excursion program. In co-operation with local municipalities, tours will be made to some new sewage purification installations.
