The Water For Desert Pilot Project treats municipal waste water using aquatic plants and constructed wetlands in a desert environment.

This project, which treats 800 Liters of water/day and has been operational for one year, will be expanded in 2005/2006 to treat 50,000 liters/day.

The treated waste water is used for irrigation of fruit tree orchards, ornimental plants, and dune stabilization tree nurseries. In addition the aquatic plants are harvested, dried and made into a high nutrient silage for animal forage.

This event will give an overview of the waste water problem in Nouakchott and a "hands on" demonstration of an economically feasible solution which recycles the desert's most valuable resource, Water.
