The artwork of 54 school students, finalists in the National Environmental Art Competition - H2O in 2020, will be on display at the Australian Museum during March and April 2005.
The second National Environmental Art Competition - H2O in 2020 seeks to educate school students about the issue of water. Students were invited to design a poster illustrating the state of our water in the year 2020 and what current measures can be taken for the future.
Over 1,000 entries were received from a range of school students aged 5 - 14 years old around Australia. The entries illustrate a range of issues about water usage and preservation. Some of the images received were:
- Sydney Harbour, complete with Bridge and Opera House with not a drop of water
- a museum exhibit with the last glass of water on the planet locked behind glass on a pedestal; and
- a cat and dog fighting over the last drop of water
"The competition H2O in 2020, was designed to encourage thought about our future and challenge our students to be the environmental heroes of tomorrow. The art works show a real concern for the future of water as well as the students' willingness to become involved with the issues that will affect their future," says Caren Trafford, founder of the competition and author of 'Water...The Amazing Journey'.
The Hon. Bob Debus, Minister for the Environment will open the exhibition at the Australian Museum on Thursday 17 March 2005. The competition reflects the message of UNESCO's International Decade for Action, 'Water for Life' which begins on World Water Day on 22 March 2005.
