World Water Day by Gramalaya, Tiruchirappalli

More than 25,000 women in rural Tamil Nadu will campaign for water and sanitation in their villages on the occasion of World Water Day 2009. "This event will be the largest congregation of women in the world who care for water and sanitation.

Gramalaya in association with WaterAid, UK, Arghyam, Bangalore and Water Partners International, USA is organizing World Water Day 2009 at its NIWAS Training Centre, Kolakkudipatti in the rural parts of Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. Women members from 2500 Self-Help Groups from 429 villages of Thottiyam, Thathaiengarpet and Thuraiyur Block will be participating in the campaign. The participants from Women self-help groups and AWASH committees of 186 urban slums and rural areas will arrive on 22nd March 2009 to observe World Water Day the National Institute of Water and Sanitation campus. As a part of WWD event, a signature campaign would be conducted among 100,000 families to create awareness on toilet habits and instill a habit of hand washing with soap. This signature campaign and the message on toilet habits and handwashing would reach 500,000 people.

This mega event would be jointly organized with the help of Total Sanitation Campaign of the District Administration, Panchayat Raj Institutions, AWASH and women self-Help groups,WAVE ( Women's Action for Village Empowerment) Federation.
