Water for Women and Girls of Cholistan - A path to empowerment

GOHER-Pakistan
Derawar Fort, Pakistan, 22 Mar 09

Global Organization for Human Empowerment and Rights (GOHER) is working for the empowerment of marginalized communities living in the most backward and neglected regions of Pakistan.
Women’s lives in Pakistan and all around the world are closely connected to water. They play the central role in providing, managing and safeguarding water and as the main role models within the family when it comes to sanitation and hygiene. Currently we are working on the project "Female Youth Empowerment Center in Bahawalpur" in collaboration with the Royal Embassy of Belgium in Islamabad. So GOHER finds it most appropriate to draw the attention of the outside world towards the Water worries of the cholistani female youth on the occasion of World Water Day because they are the biggest victim of the hardships and sufferings caused by the water scarcity which is still the most significant problem in the Cholistan Desert.

As GOHER feels itself responsible to contribute to the UN efforts in achieving the MDGs at grass root level, we are arranging this event in the heart of Cholistan, i.e. Derawar Fort instead of selecting a five Star Hotel in a big City thousands of miles away of Cholistan. Coming together at this venue will help all the stakeholders especially the cholistani women to express their viewpoints, problems and feelings regarding the water scarcity issue.

Fortunately the annual Rohi Fareed Maila (cultural festival of Cholistan) is going to start on the evening of that day, so the participants of the event will have the chance to observe the cholistani culture very closely.

Location: GOHER's Cholistan Field Office at historical Derawar Fort
Time: 3:00 pm
