World Water Day

Siruthuli
Coimbatore, India, 22 Mar 09

Observation of World Water Day

Inorder to increase the awareness with regard to Water Conservation, Siruthuli, Arghyam, Bangalore, Elgi Trust and the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) have come forward to celebrate the World Water Day on Sunday, 22nd of March 2009.

The theme of this year’s programmes is “Water Sharing” and the objective of this exercise is to raise awareness about water through the simultaneous launch of four programmes namely

1. Train the Trainers – For fruitful observance of this day, Siruthuli, along with Elgi Trust and Arghyam Foundation, Bangalore is organizing a hands-on internet based workshop on Water Portal for the school teachers of Coimbatore. In turn, the school teachers can impart the importance of water to the children → parents → public, thus creating a cycle for water conservation. The programme is organized at GRD IM Conference Hall, GRD College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore. The programme marks the formal inauguration of observation of World Water Day.

2. Repair and Restore – In the year 2005, Siruthuli has constructed 154 Rain Water Harvesting Structures within the city. All these structures now require periodical maintenance in order to harvest and store the forth coming monsoons. This programmes is getting initiated on World Water Day. Rotary Clubs and Lions Club have come forward to bear a part of the monetary expenses for the rejuvenation of the structures.

3. Thaagam Thanippom – Establishment of permanent water pots at various points through out the city. At present 22 locations are identified for the installation of earthen water pots

4. Seal & Zeal – A unique initiative aimed at putting an end to the leaks in taps at all levels of the society. If any one notices a leaking public tap, all they have to do is to send a postcard to M/s MSM & Co., Mill Road, Coimbatore so that they will repair the pipes free of cost.

These innovatively created programmes aim at increasing knowledge about water at all levels, harvesting of the run-off rain water through out the city, quenching the thirst of thousands of pedestrians during the hot summer and preventing the wastage of water at the residential and the community levels. Though Siruthuli, RAAC, Arghyam and Elgi Trust have been at the forefront of several such initiatives this is the first occasion when a multi-pronged strategy has been put in place in order to quench the thirst of an ever expanding community.
