In Vojvodina (nothrn province of Serbia) canal is the most important resource of water with multiple purposes:
Taking and conveying waters from the drainage system of agricultural and other land that spreads over the total area around 970.000 hectares.Taking and conveying waters coming from foreign countries up to 2.8 billions cub meter per year.
Intaking of waters for the irrigation system, fishponds, farms, industry and settlements up to 105 millions cub per year.
Taking, conveying and dilution of utilised waters from the industry, farms and settlings up to 3 billions cub meter per year.
Navigation on the canals for the ships up to 200-1.000 tons.
Protection from floods.
Fishing, relaxation and tourism.
The DTD canal network comprises 930 km of canals (out of which 600 km are navigable), 25 gates (intake, regulator and safety gates), 17 locks, 5 pumping stations and etc. The greatest and the most important structure of the canal network is The Dam on the river Tisa, nearby Novi Becej. Construction of the canal network began in 18th century and was finished in 1977 when the Dam on the river Tisa was put into operation.
In the last 15 years it have lost many of its advantages and purposes. In some areas it even became ecological bomb (heavy indutrial pollution). So PWMC " Vode Vojvodine" have decided to dedicate all its energy in revitalisation couse CANAL ITS LIFE in Vojvodina. In 10 yaer campaign company will try to finish tehnical, ecomomic and ecological revitalisation of DTD Canal.
