Tamilnadu Water supply And Drainage Board (TWAD Board) is an exclusive public sector service organization on the water supply and sewerage sector in TamilNadu State, India.
TWAD Board has taken the rural water supply to forefront by involving the community at all levels.The functioning of TWAD Board has taken a shift in its activities from that of 'Provider to a facilitator' in recent years. Presently the shift is aiming for "Provider to Partner" in the water supply sector.
A team of engineers in all categories have volunteered to form a "Change Management Group" (CMG)and has taken initiatives in bringing in a "Total Community Water Management" in the rural areas of Tamilnadu.
The CMG has set forth its vision in seven major areas for achieving the UN decision in the water decade 2005-2015 and also to promote the theme "Water for life"
The following activities will be taken up from 22nd March 2005.
1. TWAD Board Celebrates the WWD on 22-3-05 in all its offices (more than 150 locations) at District Head quarters. The UN theme shall be diffused at levels on the concept of water for life and UN water decade.
2.The CMG will be launched at all districts on the same day to take up volunteer activities as apart of their job in bringing a "Total Community Water Management" (TCWM).
3.The WWD will be celebrated in all districts of the TamilNadu State in around 145 villages and message of UN & water shall be spread.
4. As a part of achieving the Total Community Water Management, the rural community in around 145 vilages will be mobilized to take up volunteered activities such as protection of traditional water bodies, improvement to water supply systems, water recharge and water conservation measures, social forestry, reduction in O&M costs etc..
5. As an example,in Madurai district, TWAD Board Engineers partner themselves with the Thumpaipatti village and activate Total Community Water Management by (a) Planting of 400 tree saplings which will be provided by the District Forest Officer; (b)Mobilizing Madurai city College Girls and local school student NSS Volunteer for water body cleaning along with the villagers;(c) Arranging drawing competition and Debate among school children on "Water For Life"; (d) Cleaning the surroundings at all water collection points such as Open well, Hand Pumps, Public fountains, etc.;(e) Competition Women Self help Groups on water using Rangoli tool and best performance award will be given;
6. Similar activities will be taken up at all districts in Tamilnadu by TWAD Board involving the community and will be continued through out the year and further to achieve the UN Water Decade resolution before 2010.
7. All activities will be documented along with the best practices and the outcomes at household, village and district level and the overall performance of the CMG in TCWM. These willbe made available in TWAD Board website form April 2005 onwards.
