Save River Cauvery March

River Cauvery is the lifeline of millions of people in the State of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The 800 kilometre stretch river which originates from Karnataka and merges at Bay of Bengal near Poompuhar in Tamil Nadu serve millions of people for drinking water and domestic needs with a major contribution towards irrigation purpose. The river Cauvery is revered as sacred and people worship on special events. Cauvery is polluted by industries, chemical and fertilisers used for agriculture purpose, sewage from the cities and by open defecation all along the river banks by the people who are daily using the water for drinking and bathing. To create awareness among the public in the City of Tiruchirappalli and Musiri town, a 50 km walk by 100 youths, men and women will be organised on 21 March 2006 as a part of Gramalaya World Water Day events 2006. This programme is jointly sponosored by WaterAid, U.K. and WaterPartners International, USA where recommendations and resolutions will be passed in the next day World Water Day conference to be organised at Gramalaya Training Centre where 25,000 women will participate.
