Celebrating World Water Day, 2006
Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO)
Kathmandu, Nepal, 12 Mar 06
On the occasion of World Water Day 2006, Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO) is going to organize a community level water quality monitoring in Bagmati river of Kathmandu. Bagmati, a holy river, is a natural and a cultural heritage of Nepal which is now pronounced as almost a dead river. Realizing the need to raise awareness on its cultural value and its importance in balancing the ecosystem among the people, ENPHO has been conducting Bagmati river water quality monitoring for the past 3 years. However, this alone is not enough. Until and unless the residents are involved in the monitoring and realizing its state, this river will never gain its status and locals will never feel the responsibility to save and conserve it. Thus during the World Water Week, selected community groups and schools located along Bagmati river will be trained to conduct water quality monitoring. The activity will be conducted in seven selected stations of Bagmati river. The observation and results will be shared through press meet and workshop that will further help to implement a one year plan of community based Bagmati river water quality monitoring campaign.
