Canadians don’t spend much time thinking about water because we assume that there is plenty of it in this country to which we have ready access. We tend to take water for granted. We don’t think we have a problem.
However, the way we use water is not sustainable, and
our belief system is jeopardizing the future of our water supply.
Integrating concepts from our nursing curriculum like health promotion, social marketing and critical social theory we created a poster presentation raising awareness in four areas of concern relevant to our aggregate: Water Commoditization, Access to Safe Water, Evidence Based Recommendations for Daily Water Requirements, and Water Conservation.
The poster will be on display in the College Library and will be exhibited at the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, BC.
Contact us to request the presentation at your event/ workplace.
Becoming aware of our personal values, beliefs, and practices around water, we can affect individual change and join in the global effort to envision water as a fundamental human right, and that every person has access to an adequate, clean, available, affordable water supply.
We challenge all Canadians:
We challenge nursing students from all over the world:
1. Consider how you may be personally contributing to water issues.
2. Commit today to one action:
turn off the tap when you brush your teeth, or stop buying bottled water - bring a reusable container and drink from the tap - don't encourage further commodification of a public resource.
Dispose of chemicals/ waste properly - it all ends up in the water supply.
Hydrate your body - water is essential for life.
Challenge your fellow Canadians.
We are the second greatest users of water on the planet - not something to be proud of.
How can you make a difference?
