Now US Citizen, Nuba Mountain Refugee Returning to Sudan to Help Bring Clean Water to His Village

Departing for Sudan May 14, 2007, an assessment team from Denver, Colorado: a Nuba refugee, a local businessman, a geologist and a civil engineer, will travel to Sudan to determine the location of a water infrastructure project in the Nuba Mountains.

George Toto, Vice Chairman and Co-Founder of Nuba Water Project, is returning to the Nuba Mountains of Sudan after more than 20 years. More important to him than seeing his family and friends is the work he is doing to bring clean water to his homeland. "These people have nothing, nothing at all. I know they need so many things but first they must have clean water. After that, everything is possible."

Like present day Darfur and South Sudan in the 1990’s, the Nuba Mountains have long been a battleground. Generation after generation has been attacked, oppressed, enslaved and neglected by a succession of colonial powers and now by the government in Khartoum. Yet there is hope. With the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005, a fragile peace has settled over the region. The Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) now controls the southern half of Sudan and is in urgent need of help to create basic infrastructure necessary for the socioeconomic development of the region.
