WaterAid America will be screening a 7.5-hour film, The Long Walk, in Union Station, a busy transportation hub in the heart of the nation’s capital on World Water Day, 22 March 2007.
As commuters walk past the 9x12 foot screen this World Water Day, we hope that they will draw a comparison between their typical work day and the arduous walk that Sarah completes daily – 7.5 hours in the searing heat, carrying 45 pounds on her head for half of the journey.
The screening has been organized in collaboration with the Natural Resources Defense Council, a non-profit environmental advocacy organization with more than 1.2 million members and e-activists. NRDC has long been concerned about the need for the United States to play a leadership role in tackling environmental problems in developing nations, including the lack of safe drinking water.
The film will serve as a reminder that no matter what you may be doing, Sarah, like millions of other people all over the world, will be going to incredible lengths to collect inadequate amounts of often dirty water for their homes and families. The length of the film communicates exactly what it means to have to spend the whole day, every day, walking to get water to survive.
