Walking for Water

around the country, Netherlands, 22 Mar 07

Website in Dutch only on the sponsor walk

On 21 and 22 March more than 6000 pupils of 120 primary schools in the Netherlands will walk 6 km with 6 liters of water (= 6 kilos) on their back. Many people in developing countries do this daily for their water needs. City councils, local companies, district water boards, water works, Rotary clubs and others will sponsor the walk. The Dutch foundation "Wilde Ganzen" will give a premium of 70% on top of the money collected. The money will be used in existing drinking water and sanitation projects in developing countries. Schools and pupils will be involved in the execution and monitoring of the projects. COS Nederland, an association for centres of international cooperation, coordinates the Walk for Water, many COS organisations sponsor the walks in their own region.
The campaign Walking for Water is also made possible by the National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development (NCDO), as NCDO's core goal is to strengthen and highlight public support for achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
