Antimicrobial resistance is arguably the most serious public health threat of our time. Previously we have been able to combat resistance by developing new drugs.  But now we are facing a dry pipeline of new antibiotics  – that means infections that are treatable will once again kill.  Preventing infection through improved sanitation and hygiene is one of five objectives in the Global Action Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance.
