World Water Day 99 in Vietnam

World Water and Meteorology Days Marked

Ha Noi, March 22 (VNA) -- A meeting to mark the World Water Day (Mar. 22) and the World Meteorology Day (Mar. 23) was held in Ha Noi today, Mar. 22, by the General Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (GDMH). Attending the meeting were representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; the Ministry of Public Health; the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment; the Ministry of Public Security; the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control.

“Everyone Lives Downstream” is the theme for 1999 World Water Day while “Weather, Climate and People's Health” is the theme of this year's World Meteorology Day.

Addressing the meeting, GDMH Acting General Director Nguyen Cong Thanh, Deputy Minister of Public Health Pham Manh Hung and the representative of the United Nations Children's Fund in Ha Noi highlighted the specially important role of weather, climate and water resources' impacts upon human beings and other creatures, the unpredicted change of weather and the pollution of water resources.

The participants pledged to do their utmost to work out drastic measures to minimize damages caused by natural calamities and to improve environment and living conditions for people.--VNA
