World Water Day 2001: Water for Health

On World Water Day, 22 March the Association for Social and Health Advancement (ASHA) in Calcutta, India undertook a range of initiatives to get the issue of safe drinking water higher on the agenda:

  • Supply of potable water through tankers to acute scarcity villages where diarrhoeal cases were already occurring.
  • Disinfection of open drinking water wells through pot - chlorination method initiative.
  • Repair of tube wells and maintenance training of community care-takers planned.
  • Task force formed for control of communicable diseases.

These form part of an ongoing process of forming a Health Sector Partnership between the local government administration, government health department, government social welfare department (ICDS), local self-government bodies (Panchayats) the autonomous Mines Board of Health, the corporate - Integrated Coal Mining Ltd.
