World Water Day 2001: Water for Health

Overview of events

WWD 2001 Event, South Africa
Urine Diversion: Not Just a Technology for the Rural Areas

Come and see it Installed in our Johannesburg House:
Open Day at the start of the Water Week in South Africa
Sunday 18 March 2001, 09:00 to 17:00

Water Wise Energy Efficient.
These are the characteristics of our house.

Inspired by the people of Leliefontein TLC, Namaqualand we have changed our normal flush toilet in the bedroom to a urine diversion toilet (a type of dry sanitation) and installed a system to recycle greywater to demonstrate that even within urban areas it is not essential to have waterborne sewage.

The result, low water bills and a green garden.

Isabella, Richard and Michael Holden invite you to visit their home on the 18 March 2001 to come and see for yourself how the systems work. In addition to the toilet and the greywater recycling system the house also features:

  • Solar heating for hot water (reduced electricity requirement)
  • Insulated roof (keeps house cool in summer and warm in winter)
  • Strategic planting to keep the house shaded and cool in summer but unshaded and hot in winter
  • Composting of all organic material (Greatly improved water retention characteristics of the soil)

All of these features enable us to maintain a high standard of living but with low monthly bills.

We look forward to seeing you at
