WWD 2001 Event Ghana - Northern regions
On 22 March the northern region Community Water and Sanitation Agency is organising a WWD event in Tamale, the capital of the Northern region. Awards are to be given to community organisations and groups for outstanding contributions to improvements and sustainability in rural water and sanitation provision and use.
This is the second annual event to be held in Tamale by CWS, the agency responsible for provided potable water to all rural communities in the northern region of Ghana. The aim of the agency is to provide potable water and thus improve the health status of the residents of the northern region.
The northern regional minister will give the keynote address on the theme water and health in the north. Ghana has as a national goal 80% coverage for potable water by the year 2010. Currently the northern region has less than 50% coverage.
Awards will be given to 12 categories of individuals and groups who have made an exceptional contribution to the provision of potable water and sanitation facilities in the region, thus improving the health of the rural population.
Stakeholders in the sector have contributed materials and cash for the awards including bicycles, field boots, materials for small towns water systems, hand washing supplies for schools, office equipment, etc.
