WWD 2001 Event Indonesia
This is to share with you that an intersectoral committee has been set up in Indonesia for the 2001 WWD celebration. Chaired by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, the committee involved representatives from the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ministries of Education, Forestry, Religious Affairs, Environment and a number of companies. The Committee is currently making preparations for a number of activities including a panel discussion, a one day seminar, a field visit to a dam site where free health services will be offered to the local community and a gathering for school children. WHO will be supporting the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
The AusAID-World Bank supported WASPOLA (Water Supply and Sanitation Policy Formulation and Action Planning) Project will sponsor an article in a leading national daily on the policy that the project has been developing.
At the provincial level, activities involving school children will take place in East Java and West Nusa Tenggara with support from UNICEF. In East Java, an exhibition of the results of campaign activities by local students on environmental issues will be held in Surabaya as well as a dialogue with the provincial parliamentarians and a national expert on environment. In West Nusa Tenggara, a number of primary school students will demonstrate the SODIS (Solar Disinfection) technology that they have been practicing in a gathering that will be attended by the Governor.
In the other provinces, the respective chapter of the association of environmental health practitioners may initiate relevant activities.
