World Water Day 2001: Water for Health

Overview of events

WWD 2001 Event
Nigeria - Niger Delta

Water issues are very dear to us in the Community Rights Initiative (CORI). The people of the Niger Delta are deeply concerned about what is happening to their rivers, wetlands and water resources.

On February 2, 2001, we celebrated the World Wetlands Day. It was very successful because of the involvement of the local communities.

For this year's World Water Day, March 22, we are planning a Community Forum on the topic: Freshwater as a Vital Community Resource. The programme will involve 50 Local Communities in Egi, Etche, Ikwerre, Ekpeye and Abua areas. The Community Development Committees, youth and women associations to gather and discuss the issues involved. A central activity will take place in Ogbogu town where local participants will share indigenous knowledge about Freshwater as a vital community resource.

Background materials on water and water-related issues will be sent to the targeted communities while the March Edition of our Newsletter, Environmental Care will focus on World Water Day.

CORI will also promote public awareness on the World Water Day using local media.
