India - Water Resources Day and World Water Day 2001

Water Resources Day and World Water Day-2001 will be organised on 22nd March 2000 at Nehru Memorial Auditorium, Teen Murti Bhawan, New Delhi. A Curtain Raiser function is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India and the UN Agencies and is being hosted by Indian Water Resources Society through its Delhi Centre.

The Event is sponsored by WHO, UNICEF, WSP, UNDP, UNESCO, Central Water Commission, Central Ground Water Board, WAPCOS, Institution of Engineers (I) - Delhi State Centre and many other organisations.

Theme of the Water Resources Day-2001 is “Management for Floods and Droughts”. Similarly the theme of the World Water Day-2001 is “Water for Health”.

A special event during the day is presentation of the Dr. Kanwar Sain Endowment lecture by Prof. P.V. Indiresan, former Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.

Highlights of the day will be:

    Inaugural Session
  • Mr. Z Hasan, Union Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources and President, Indian Water Resources Society, will welcome the participants.
  • Shri Arjun Charan Sethi, Union Minister for Water Resources, will be the Chief Guest of Hounor and will deliver the Inaugural Address.
  • Smt. Bijoya Chakravati, Union Minister of State for Water Resources will deliver the presidential Address.
  • Dr. Robert Kim Farley, New Delhi representative of the World Health Organisation will present the World Water Day-2001 theme paper “Water for Health”.
  • Chief, W&ES, UNICEF will also address the participants.
  • Shri P.L. Diwan, Chairman and Managing Director, WAPCOS (I) Ltd. and Chairman, Indian Water Resources Society, Delhi Centre will deliver Vote of Thanks.

    Technical Session

  • Prof. P.V. Indiresan will deliver the Dr. Kanwar Sain Endowment Lecture.
  • Shri A.D. Mohile, former Chairman, Central Water Commission will present the Water Resources Day-2001 theme paper " Management of Floods and Droughts”.
  • Prof. S.Z. Qasim, will coordinate a panel discussion on both the themes, which will be co-paneled by Prof. Kamta Prasad, Shri Palat Mohan Das, Sh. B.N. Navalwala, Prof. Subash Chander and Dr. C.D. Thatte.
  • Prominent NGOS and other personalities are also likely to enlighten the participants through their experiences in the two theme sectors. The Personalities are: Swami Desikatmananda of Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi; Dr. A.K. Susheela of Flurosis Research and Rural Development Foundation, Delhi; Dr. D. Anand, SAKSHI, New Delhi; Sh. Katar Singh, Irrigation and Research Management Indtitute, Anand, Gujarat and Dr. K.K. Datta, Director, National Institute of Communicable Diseases Delhi.
  • The function will end with a vote of thanks by Shri A.S. Dhingra, Organising Secretary, IWRS, Delhi Centre.

In all about 500 participants from all over India are expected to attend. A Press & Electronic Media Conference is also scheduled for 21st march 2001. A small exhibition is also being planed.
