WWD 2001 Event Water and Sanitation Program's (WSP) New Governance Council launched on World Water Day 2001
The WSP has formed a Program Council (WSPC) in order to strengthen the governance and strategic oversight by our key partners on our coming activities. The first WSPC meeting, to be chaired by the World Bank's Vice President Nemat T. Shafik, responsible for water supply and sanitation, will be held on World Water Day marking WSP's renewed commitment to improving sustainable access to the water and sanitation services for the poor. The Council membership is drawn from donors, country level clients, strategic partners, UNDP and international experts and the World Bank (represented by the Director of Energy and Water, Jamal Saghir).
The WSPC will provide overall guidance to, and supervision of the WSP. It's main responsibility will be to approve the mission, geographic and thematic focus, core operational policies and overall organization of the WSP. At this first meeting the WSPC will be reviewing a new WSP Program Strategy for the period 2001 - 2003 which seeks to enhance Program support globally and in its regions of operation.
