World Water Day 2001: Water for Health

WWD 2001 Event
Afghanistan - Southern region

The following is an example of activities in one region (southern) of Afghanistan only. Many stakeholder have met inside Afghanistan and shared ideas on how to celebrate the occasion and jointly plan the activities between now and March 22, 2001. The participants suggested the following ways for promoting the day:

  1. Prepare banners and flags with WWD messages: A joint UNICEF, WHO and PHC team would agree on the messages and make 20 banners to be pasted in public places in Kandahar city. UNICEF would pay for the costs of banners.
  2. Booklets: UNOPS published some booklets on health and hygiene and they would be distributed on that day.
  3. Leaflets: UNRCO office and UNOP's would provide 8000 leaflets on water, which was developed and printed locally by WATSAN SWG last year, to be distributed all over the region before and after March 22nd. We would try if we could develop more leaflets based on the theme of WWD for the year.
  4. Greetings cards: March 21st is the first day of Solar new year, therefore 150 greeting cards would be developed locally having water and health messages on it and would be distributed.
  5. Drawing competition : UNCHS and UNOP/CDAP would organize drawing competitions in community/home based schools for boys and girls on the theme of WWD and the top 3 drawings would receive prizes on that day.
  6. Government statements: RRD, Municipality and city water supply department were assigned to prepare the statement and be broadcast from the local radio.
  7. Round table: Planning department would liase with local radio and arrange a round table to interview the representatives of UNICEF, WHO, RRD, City Water Supply Department, PHC and UNCHS.
  8. Slogan competitions: Planning department would organize slogan competition and good slogan on the subject would be awarded.
  9. Advertisements of messages on WWD through mass media: Planning Department would arrange the tasks through Culture and information Department.
  10. Journalist award: Planning Department would arrange a competition among local journalists through local daily and the best article on Water and health would be awarded.
