World Water Day 2001: Water for Health

Overview of events

WWD 2001 Event
Papua New Guinea, treated water

In the Civil Engineering Department in Papua New Guinea, we have been operating two field scale Slow Sand Filters (SSF) together with a pebble Matrix Filter (PMF) as a roughing filter to protect the SSF. The first SSF received raw water directly and the second SSF received PMF pretreated effluent. The complete system was designed and constructed by our students as their final year project over the last two years. Prior to this the PMF has only been tested in the laboratory at University College London and this is the first time we have field tested it with SSF. We managed to extend the SSF run time significantly.

To mark the World Water Day we have supplied the SSF treated water from this experimental filter system to a small community in Ambuasuz village on the outskirts of Lae, by providing a small storage tank and a standpipe today.
